$8 Billion Rail Plan

Route Planned Through Greenville

On February 13, 2009, Congress and the President enacted the massive American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). Included in the huge spending bill was a plan too create a high speed passenger rail line. The government is investing $8 Billion into the project. Here is a map of the current plan.

Note that the plan calls for the line to go through Greenville and Columbia. You have to wonder what the cost of riding the train will be when it is finally finished. However, if the cost is reasonable, it could be a good way to get to football games around the SEC.

The proposed Obama budget now being debated includes an additional $1 Billion a year for the next five years to help pay for the cost of developing the line.

More information about the rail plan is available at the DOT Fact Sheet.

Has anybody realy thought about the routes he has in the South? Atlanta, Gville, Charlotte, Raleigh is smart. Who wants to go Raleigh, Columbia, Savanna? Where are the connections from Gville, Cola, Chasn? Where is the ATL Chattanooga line? They left out one of the largest cities in NC... Greensboro. The Dems rail (no pun intended) at AIG & GM, but the give truckloads of money for this mess. I don't get it. Its about as well thought out as the rest of the "stimulus plan".

The routes are not really set in stone. They are tentative. The plan will allow the earmark crowd in Congress to horsetrade, and the political subdivisions of the States to grovel to the Feds so a route will actually through their towns.
