Success Does Not Make a Good Life

Stewart Says Matthews' Book a "Recipe for Sadness"

MSNBC Hardball host, Chris Matthews, has written a book comparing life to political campaigns. Matthews apparently believes one should live his life as a campaign. He attempts to defend this philosophy in an October 2, 2007, "interview from hell" with Jon Stewart.

Diplomacy Game Draw

ACD 229: Italian End of Game Statement

12 Centers

Three way draw with Russia and Austria

This post sums up the results of a Diplomacy game I have been playing by e-mail since January 2009. More information about the Diplomacy hobby can be found at The Diplomacy Pouch.

When a Dip game ends, it is tradition for the players to write an End of Game (EOG) statement about their strategy. The following post, complete with some maps, shares the Italian viewpoint.

Perfunctorily Accolades

First, thank you Brian for serving as a Game Master for our game. You did a fine job of keeping the game on schedule and you were extremely prompt in publishing the turn results. I know that took a lot of work, and you have my thanks.

I enjoyed playing this game. This was a dynamic game with a lot of fluidity. The other players were quite pleasant and enjoyable people. I am glad to have met and re-met everyone. As I wrote in this
January post, it is very cool to hear from some old friends.

About the Compuserve connection

To many, we are the aging pioneers of the Internet. We were piddling with the Net in the early 1990s. Not many can say that. Those were the days of access through Compuserve, Genie, and AOL. The kids today who read this won't have a clue about a dos prompt, and they don't know what in the heck that last sentence meant.

On Compuserve, we played some Dip by email and our games were published weekly in The Armchair Diplomat (TAD). We also had lengthy discussions in a Diplomacy Forum. There, we talked about everything from politics, to evolution, to baseball, to the meaning of the 1983 edition rule against ambiguous orders.

The actual participation and/or reunion with old friends in this game did not disappoint me, and did much to rekindle some good memories. On to the Italian strategy . . . .

Italian Strategy

My strategy during pre-Spring 1901 was to advocate for an internal triple alliance with Austria and Germany. I figured the I/G/A alliance agreement would protect each of the partners' borders, and enhance the chances for all to focus power against the initial victims. We could each chip in forces as needed for mutual defense, or offense as the case might be. Our alliance diplomacy would be directed toward manipulating the outside powers into fighting and squabbling amongst themselves. Meanwhile, all three of the internal allies could grow to the mid game. Once we were dominant, it would be every man for himself.

That was my proposal.

Both of the other internal powers agreed to the Italian internal triple alliance (I/G/A).

The game developed strategically to the benefit of the internal triple. However, I am not convinced that the German player (JD) was fully committed to the theory. His alliance with England proved stronger than the triple at critical points.

Nevertheless, the initial diplomacy strategy worked out great for our triple. Austria and Turkey attacked Russia. England attacked Russia. (Not good for Russia.) And, Germany and England attacked France. Nobody attacked Italy. This was a perfect environment for the internal triple to flourish!

I am not sure if any of the outside powers ever figured out that we (Germany/Austria/Italy) were in a triple alliance. If they did figure it out, it may have been too late to remedy the diplomatic situation.

The first challenge for Italy in this game was Turkey. As noted above, my ally Austria joined with Turkey to attack Russia. However, that attack was going so well I became worried about the Turk.

By the end of 1901, it appeared likely that my Austrian ally would decide to work with the Turk well into the mid-game. That decision (by Austria) would have been very bad for Italy. There was no question in my mind--despite contrary assurances by Marc (Turkey)--that Turkey intended to attack Italy as soon as possible. Based on the communications with his neighbors, I concluded that Turkey intended to build fleets with the fruit of the Russian centers. That fruit would have sailed for Tunis and Italy would have to give up her plans for westward expansion and return defend home centers from a growing Turk. No Italian growth would mean an undefended French and weak Austrian border. It was only a matter of time, I foresaw, before a weak ineffectual Italy would be overcome by her relatively stronger neighbors. I foresaw Turkey grinding Italy up with her navy, and Austria succumbing to temptation and taking Venice.

Thus, Italian late 1901 diplomacy was heavily directed toward persuading Austria to severe the A/T alliance and stab the Turk. Here is a map of the situation that had me so worried about my budding G/I/A.

Fortunately, the Austrian accepted my argument and decided that 1902 was the best time for a Turkish stab. Mike moved aggressively to attack Turkey at that point, and my alliance with Austria flourished. On the other hand, the resulting A/R alliance between Mike (Austria) and Doug (Russia) lasted the rest of the game.

Austria had only one fleet deployed in the eastern Med (in Turkey) and the Italian navy was able to continue its journey west to rescue France, then under assault by G/E forces. By agreement, Italy first supported Germany to Marseilles, and then re-took Marseilles a turn later. As Italian navies moved to shore up French defense against English attacks, Italy gained dominance over the Iberian centers but she did not take them immediately. Doing so would have let England rebound and the French fleets were pounding the Englander.

The f/I alliance worked well in the mid game for both France (DJ) and Italy against England (Frank). But the tension caused by the war of f/I versus e/G put stress on the German/Italy relationship. During the course of that conflict, Italy asked Germany repeatedly to consider a stab of England in exchange for an Italian stab of France. That would have allowed G/I to maintain its alliance, and its strength. G/I might have used our power to persuade Austria it was past time to stab the Russian. Unfortunately, Germany was reluctant to stab England. Italy was therefore forced to stick with France all the way until the total demise of England. France, which had no home centers by that point, soon followed England into elimination. Unfortunately, the whole mess created a rift in the I/G alliance that proved irreparable.

Germany deteriorating as she was under attack by A/R. With Austria and Germany now at full war, Italy was forced to choose between attacking Austria or Germany. The German centers in France (Paris/Brest) seemed more tempting and a better long term strategy. Thus, Italy snagged the two German centers, accelerating Germany's fall.

At around that point, Austria ended the A/I alliance by stabbing Italy and taking her undefended center in Turkey. Perhaps an Italian decision to fortify her defenses by deploying a fleet in the Adriatic Sea was the straw that broke the alliance between I/A.

Fleet Adriatric did make Venice unassailable. It was a good "home guard." [smile] However, Fleet Adriatric also represented a convoy threat to the entire Balkans coast that Austria was unable to ignore.

Meanwhile, Italy took all of England and was maneuvering to gain Bel/Hol as Germany was losing her final centers. Russia was not advancing quickly.

I tried to get Austria to stick with the A/I and attack Russia. There were a couple of beautiful opportunities where Austria could have taken several Russian centers, including as late as the fall of 1911 after Russia build F Stp instead of an army. The wise Austrian would not pull that trigger.

In my view, if Austria had attacked Russia, such an attack would have opened the door for a possible Italian victory. That would have motivated Russia into a vigorously counter-attack. Italy had some fleets as far north as the North Sea. poised to move toward Scandanavia if Russia moved to attack Austria. That could have opened the door for an Italian drive to 18 centers. (See map below.)

In the end, the threat of an Italian win was probably my undoing with regard to diplomacy directed at persuading Austria to attack Russia. Perhaps Austria and/or Russia will confirm this speculation in an EOG Statement.

With regard to the draw votes controversy over the final several turns, Italy did vote yes for the draw for three or four turns once it became apparent Austria would not stab Russia. I suspect Germany was the power vetoing the draw vote.

Why? I figure Germany was having too much fun writing the Nobby Nobb press.

Aviation Structural Mechanic Rating

I posted last week that I am proud of my daughter. That post noted that she has signed on to join the navy as an Aviation Structural Mechanic (AM), and it described the job. She prefers to enter the Navy in as a Hospital Corpman; however, there are no openings for that slot. Unless the needs of the Navy change, she is slated to ship out for Boot Camp in Great Lakes at the end of October, and if she can make it through, then go to A-school in Pensacola to learn the AM rating.

I found some images on the net of Navy Aviation Structural Mechanics at work. This 58-second video shows some of those images.

Fed Loans $500 Billion to Foreign Banks in 2008

Arrogant Fed Chairman Says, "Congress Approved It"

Here is a clip of Congressman Alan Grayson (D. Fl) cross-examining Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. Grayson hones in on a Fed Balance Sheet entry showing that the Fed loaned over $500 Billion to foreign central banks.

The Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke is asked who got the money, and he states he, "does not know." He later says that the half Billion Dollars was distributed to 14 foreign central banks. When asked by Congressman Grayson where the Federal Reserve obtained the authority to loan half a trillion dollars to foreign banks, Bernanke stated it came from "Section 14 of the Federal Reserve Act."

The answer stunned the freshman Congressman. He wrote on a blog entry on his Congressional website:

This amount is ten times the size of the entire State Department budget. Publicly elected lawmakers proposed and debated over 100 amendments to the State department budget. That’s how democracy is supposed to work -- not through secret deliberations in which 12 unelected bankers trample on Congress’s Constitutional authority to appropriate funds, approve treaties, and coin money.
http://grayson.house.gov/

When Bernanke again says he, "does not know" from what provision that Fed authority arises, a Fed lawyer behind him tells him his authority derived from Section 14.

Section 14 of the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, which does allow the Fed an incredible amount of power to make secret purchases "in the open market," does not allow the Fed to make huge, Billion Dollar loans to foreign central banks.

Section 14 of the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 states as follows:

Any Federal reserve bank may, under rules and regulations prescribed by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, purchase and sell in the open market, at home or abroad, either from or to domestic or foreign banks, firms, corporations, or individuals, cable transfers and bankers’ acceptances and bills of exchange of the kinds and maturities by this chapter made eligible for rediscount, with or without the indorsement of a member bank.
12 U.S.C. § 253 (emphasis added).

Notice that the Fed is limited to transfers that take place "in the open market." The Fed's action here was not taken in the open market. In fact, they were secret transactions between international bankers, including our own Federal Reserve.

In this clip, Bernanke says the $500 Billion of transactions were approved by the Federal Open Market Committee. That Committee of twelve wealthy bankers serves in secret with very limited Congressional oversight. Traditionally, the minutes of that meeting to authorize this huge transaction will not be released to Congress or the public for five years . . . 2013.

Please watch this video. Then, look to the right side of this Blog for the Audit the Fed link, and sign the Petition to Audit the Fed.

Reality Check: Trends from 2008

Graphs In Pack's Favor

This is my second reality check post as we approach the college football season. Read my first post here.

I am writing these reality check posts to temper the tendency of Gamecock readers to become over-enthusiastic during the pre-season. That tendency just sets us up for disappointment.

Your writer is an optimist. I would love nothing better than to see the 2009 Gamecocks win 10 or 11 games, and I believe it might be possible.

This second reality-check post pits my optimism against two graphs that paint a stark reality of the teams' 2008 trends.

Let me say first, I understand that this is a new year, a completely new team, and a new attitude. Like many, this Gamecock fan loves the work of new strength coach Craig Fitzgerald. I am emboldened by reports about the high level of enthusiasm and leadership with this 2009 Gamecock team. Those reports make me feel really good.

On the other hand, I just watched most of the SEC coaches speaking at the Media Days, and it seems that all of the other SEC teams feel about the same way as we do. I figure that NC State, led by Head Coach, Tom O'Brien, who brings a Marine's attitude toward off season work, will have a pretty intense off-season regimen. We simply have no way of knowing whose off-season effort is better until the teams meet on the field.

One thing that does not change, however, are the historical facts. Below is a table that charts the teams' 2008 wins and losses over the course of the season. The two teams started the 2008 season in opposite directions, and they pretty much ended up the same way.

This second chart is like the first except it charts the point-spreads of the two teams through the 2008 season. Similar to the first chart, the Gamecocks started strong, and finished weakly. On the other hand, the 2008 Wolfpack team performed in the opposite fashion.

Looking at the data presented here, one has to acknowledge that the 2008 trends seem to favor the Wolfpack.

Reality check.

Crappy Watercolors

Below are some pictures painted down at Garden City Beach (SC) earlier this month. These are pretty crappy pictures. However, I can think of very few better activities than sitting on the beach painting with watercolors. Eric Norwood: Respect the Alma Mater

Number 40 Raises Toast for "Here's A Health, Carolina"

ESPN Reporter Erin Andrews is in the news for a coworker's publication of a surreptitiously taken, nude video. The video was shot through a hotel peephole. Andrews was alone in her room when he shot the tape. The coworker invaded Andrews privacy and must be brought to justice.

However, as the season approaches, this is a great time to watch one Andrews best interviews.

This one she took of my favorite Gamecock player--Eric Norwood. Watch toward the end of the video as Norwood, in the midst of the national television interview with the lovely Andrews, turns to face the band as it plays the Carolina Alma Mater, We Hail Thee Carolina.

We at Carolina have a tradition at the end of the song. We raise our arms holding our hands in the shape of a cup as if toasting while we sing, "Here's a health, Carolina." Norwood respects the tradition as Andrews interviews him.

This guy is a college football player to his core. Hail, Norwood. Now you see why he is my favorite player.

Above is a picture my sons and I made on the Carolina campus before the LSU game was televised by ESPN in 2008.

Navy Careers

My daughter signed up to join the navy yesterday. Her tentative job assignment is Aviation Structural Mechanic (AM). She will enter the navy as an AMx2.

There are two major disciplines within the Navy's structural mechanic rating field. The sailors with AM ratings repair hydraulics systems and the skin of the aircraft. The AME sailors repair safety equipment such as ejection seats, flight gear, and survival equipment.

This post contains a cut and paste from About.com about the details about the job my daughter could be assigned as an AM if she can make it through boot camp and A-school. I will post about the AME duties later.

General Info: The Aviation Structural Mechanic - Hydraulics (AMH), maintains all aircraft main and auxiliary hydraulic power systems, actuating subsystems and landing gear. Aircrew volunteers from this rating perform inflight duties in various types of aircraft. Aircrew volunteers should volunteer under the Aircrew Recruiting Program.

What They Do: The duties performed by AMHs include: removing, repairing and replacing hydraulic system pumps, auxiliary power systems and unit actuating subsystems; maintaining aircraft landing gear system, brakes and related pneumatic systems, reservoir pressurization, emergency actuating devices, pumps, valves, regulators, cylinders, lines and fittings; servicing pressure accumulators, emergency air bottles, oleo (air-oil) struts, reservoirs and master brake cylinders; inspecting, removing and replacing components of hydraulic systems; replacing gaskets, packing, and wipers in hydraulic components; performing daily, preflight, postflight and other periodic aircraft inspections.

Enlistees are taught the fundamentals of this rating through on-the-job training or formal Navy schooling. Operational training is available in this rating during later stages of career development.

"A" School Pensacola, Fl. 6-8 weeks

Basic Aviation Structural Mechanic course, basic aviation theory course, and skills required for specialized AMH rating Group instruction, classroom and shop After completion of Core "A" school, AMHs may attend an additional two week Organizational Level maintenance school.

AMHs may be assigned to aviation squadrons, aircraft carriers or to other Navy ships carrying aircraft, to Naval Air Stations or other aviation shore facilities in the United States or overseas. You will have opportunities for formal schoolhouse advanced technical training throughout your career. During a 20-year period, AMHs spend about 50 percent of their time assigned to fleet units and 50 percent to shore stations.

Working Environment: Aviation Structural Mechanics may be assigned to sea or shore duty any place in the world, so their working environment varies considerably. They may work in hangars or hangar decks, or outside on flight decks or flight lines at air stations. A high noise level is a normal part of their work environment.

AMHs work closely with others, do mostly physical work and require little supervision. AMHs may also serve as flight engineers aboard certain aircraft.

Trillion Dollar Socialized Medicine: Obama's Waterloo?

Obama's Mass E-mail Attacks DeMint! Obscures Healthcare Debate

Here is an interesting clip featuring South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint.

DeMint was asked about his "Waterloo" comment regarding President Obama by Neil Cavuto. The Waterloo comment was made, says DeMint, because he was concerned about helping the American people stop the Obama Administration from ramming unread, disastrous, Leviathan Bills through Congress without debate.

The Obama Administration is now trying to max-pump a $1.2 Trillion, socialized medicine bill through Congress. It took issue with the li'l ol' Senator from South Carolina.

It appears that the political machinary in the Obama Administration is going to attempt to target Freshman South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint as the lightning rod of Obama Administration's political push for passage.

This targeting of Senator DeMint is right out of Saul Alinski's Rules for Radicals playbook.
'Pick the Target, Freeze It, Personalize It and Polarize It.'
- Saul Alinsky, Rules for Radicals

So who is politicizing the health care debate anyway?

Check out this email I received from the Obama Administration:
Last week, Republican Senator Jim DeMint made it pretty clear why the opponents of health care reform are fighting so hard. As he told a special interest attack group, "If we're able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him." Here's how the President responded:

Think about that. This isn't about me. This isn't about politics. This is about a health care system that is breaking America's families, breaking America's businesses and breaking America's economy. And we can't afford the politics of delay and defeat when it comes to health care. Not this time, not now. There are too many lives and livelihoods at stake.

With Congress only days away from finalizing their plans for reform, it's time to stand up with the President and fight back against this disastrous brand of old-style politics. So we need as many people as possible to publicly support the President's principles for health care reform and call on Congress to act.

Before the first full votes in Congress, we'll publish the signatures in newspaper ads across the nation, to make sure your voice is heard.

Watch President Obama's full response, then add your name in support of reform. Or if you've already signed, please forward this message to every one of your friends and neighbors so they can join you.
The reality of it is that Senator DeMint has it right here.

Nobody on Capital Hill has read the 1000 page health care monster President Obama is touting. At least one version floating around in unpublished form is reported to tax the crap out of small business to pay for socialized medicine. That is a bad idea in a sound economy. In an economic climate like ours, it is a tsunami.

What is wrong with Senator DeMint's idea? Why not slow it down and debate the ideas for health care reform instead rushing through another colossal mistake before the August recess?

Canadian Health Care

Canadian Supreme Court Admits Long Lines Commonplace

This post looks at the results of socialized medicine in Canada.

Health care in Canada is provided through a government sponsored single payer delivery system. The current Canadian system operates under a 1998 law called the “Social Union Framework Agreement.” Under this law, the national government reached agreements with the Provinces. The Agreement required each Province to commit to universal health care for Canadian citizens as well as a certain level of quality.

In keeping with this purpose, the Province of Quebec enacted a law to preserve the integrity of its public care. The Quebec law prohibited physicians from opting out of the system and operating private medical practices under a separate private insurance system.

In 2000, two people brought a lawsuit challenging the law. One, a surgeon (George Zeliotis), and one a patient (Jacques Chaoulli) who needed a hip replacement operation, alleged the prohibition was unconstitutional and infringed on their rights to life and liberty.

The Province of Quebec answered the lawsuit by arguing the prohibition was rational. The Province asserted the prohibition was good because it preserved precious medical resources for the public plan. The Province also asserted a private system of medicine would create unfairness because a higher quality, better health care system might develop for the wealthy.

Claude Castonguay, who was Quebec’s Minister of Health at the time the Quebec prohibition was enacted, testified regarding the legislation’s objectives:
we wanted to ensure that everyone would have access to health care, regardless of their ability to pay. Also, because the Health Insurance Act was part of a whole — there was Bill 65 respecting health services — we wanted a thorough reform. We wanted access to health care to be as equal as possible everywhere in Quebec, regardless of place of residence, regardless of financial circumstances . . . .
As stated in the opinion, “There would be a reduction in human resources in the public plan because many physicians and other health care professionals would leave the plan out of a motive for profit.”

In ruling against Quebec's prohibition, the Canadian Supreme Court stated that he practical effect of the Quebec law was that “most Quebeckers have no choice but to accept any delays in the public health regime and the consequences this entails.”

The lengthening waiting lists for medical treatment was a central issue in the case. The Canadian Supreme Court recounted as follows:
Not only is it common knowledge that health care in Quebec is subject to waiting times, but a number of witnesses acknowledged that the demand for health care is potentially unlimited and that waiting lists are a more or less implicit form of rationing (report by J.‑L. Denis, Un avenir pour le système public de santé (1998), at p. 13; report by Y. Brunelle, Aspects critiques d’un rationnement planifié Waiting lists are therefore real and intentional.(1993), at p. 21).
The witnesses also commented on the consequences of waiting times. One orthopedic surgeon, Eric Lenczner, testified the usual waiting period for orthopedic surgery was approximately one year. He provided evidence the wait created risk that patient's injuries will become irreparable. Dr. Lenczner also stated that many patients on non‑urgent waiting lists for orthopaedic surgery are in pain and cannot walk or enjoy any real quality of life. Another physician, Edwin Coffey, corroborated that testimony and stated persons with chronic arthritis waiting for a hip replacement may experience considerable pain.

Ultimately, the Supreme Court overruled the lower courts and held the prohibition against private medicine was unconstitutional and deprived Canadian citizens of their liberties. Chaoulli v. Quebec, 1 S.C.R. 791, 2005 SCC 35 (Sup. Ct of Canada 2005).

The Canadian system shows that when government takes over of health care there is an incentive to takes away freedom and liberty for the sake of a perceived improvement of the overall public good.

Obama's First Pitch

President Obama tossed out the first pitch of the 2009 Allstar Game on July 14, 2009. The greatest current baseball player, Albert Pujols, saved the President by snagging the pitch before it could bounce in front of the plate.

It is a contrived controversy. Before the ceremonial first pitch, the media puts pressure on Presidents not to bounce the pitch in front of home plate.

The contrived controversy about bouncing the ball started in 2001. That year, President Bush was given the honor of throwing out the first pitch of the World Series. Beforehand, Alex Rodriguez cautioned him about throwing the pitch from the pitcher's mound rubber, and warned him about bouncing the ball. Rodriguez told President Bush that the New York fans would boo him if he failed on either element of the first pitch ceremony.

Bush delivered a strike. It wasn't a 90 miles per hour heater, but the pitch was down the middle and waist high.

Thus, when President Obama was offered the chance to throw out the Allstar Game first pitch, the contrived controversy about bouncing the ball in front of the plate arose again. Gamblers were even betting on whether the President could make it to the plate without bouncing the ball. The majority of touts were in favor of President Obama.

However, President Obama failed. Albert Pujols, who warmed up President Obama under the stadium before the pitch, saved the President's bacon by squatting on top of the pate. His position in front of the plate suggests Pujols knew something about the President's southpaw arm. When President Obama delivered a high arching toss, Pujols reached well across and in front of the plate. Thus, Albert saved the President from an embarrasing moment--a first pitch that bounced before home plate.

The President's opponents contend the failed first pitch is symbolic of President Obama's first Administration. However, after the game, Mariano Rivera gave President Obama props for the pitch. "It was good," Rivera said of Obama's toss. "Nobody can hit that pitch."

Here is a video of the historic moment at the 2009 Allstar Game.

Hammer of the Scots

Braveheart on a Board

My son Nathan and I tried out a two-player board game called Hammer of the Scots. A picture of the box is shown to the left.

The game takes a while to play. We played it out over the course of two evenings, about two hours per night. It played faster and faster as we learned the rules so it might move better as we gain experience.

The theme of the game is the English suppression of a Scottish rebellion during medieval times. The big names from the movie, Braveheart, with Mel Gibson as William Wallace, are present in the game. That includes Edward Longshanks, his son, and Wallace.

The game uses "block" style to simulate the conflict. A picture of a couple typical blocks is shown to the right. The numbers on them indicate the movement and combat capabilities.

The goal of the game is to gain influence over a majority of the Scottish nobels. The nobels start off mostly in the English camp. That is when the rebellion starts with Wallace rampaging around and persuading many to switch camps.

The English get a lot of reinforcements in the game; however, the reinforcements are difficult to keep supplied, especially as they are maneuvered far to the north or the Highlands. The map to the right shows the board from the south.

Nathan and I had fun playing the game. The Scots won the game 9 - 6, but it was nip and tuck until the end of the game. We had fun throwing dice and fighting battles for control of Scotland.

Federal Reserve Audit Ammo

The American News Project is dedicated to defending and promoting the public interest through high-quality, investigative video journalism.
The Federal Reserve is one of the most powerful and secretive institutions in Washington, long considered beyond the reach of lawmakers. But now, as details emerge of how the Fed secretly doled out more than a trillion dollars during the financial crisis, a rare bipartisan movement in Congress demands that the Fed be held accountable.

Failed Policies of the Past

JFK Was No Failure

As he lobbied heavily for passage of the first February $900 Billion stimulus Bill--later enacted and signed into law--President Obama stated, "there have been misguided criticisms of this plan that echo the failed theories that helped lead us into this crisis -- the notion that tax cuts alone will solve all our problems . . . ." B. Obama, Washington Post, The Action Americans Need (Feb. 5, 2009). FoxNews Report (Feb. 6, 2009).

The stimulus cry from the President echoed Obama's campaign rhetoric in which he attacked moderate Republican John McCain's suggestion that the economy would benefit from greater tax cuts. Obama called that argument a "failed policy of the past."

Now, President Obama's Administration is suggesting that a second stimulus package may be in order. He stated recently that he is leaving that option, "on the table."

The problem is that the Obama Administration's economic policies are all about Keynesian economic principles. Policies based on out-moded Keynesian theories are truly failed. But the United States is digging up that old road again with repeated calls for government stimulus plans that sink us into debt, but fail to deliver any real impetus to recover. See I. Brannon and C. Edwards, CATO Institute Tax and Budget Bulletin, The Troubling Return of Keynesianism (January 2009).

Keynesian economic theory is a favorite idea amongst politicians. That is because it is a macro-economic idea that empowers government.

Keynesian economists postulate that government interventions in an economy are useful to smooth out downturns. Hence, our current ruling class likes to implement "stimulus" plans. This allows government to dole out money to its favored constituancy . . . or campaign contributors as the case may be.

One element of the Keynesian economic theory is something called the "multiplier." For every dollar spent (usually by government) there is thought to be a multiplier effect. Thus, we hear about the great benefit of stimulus spending by our government. It hopes the money government spends in this recession will affect a recovery.

However, as our current rising unemployment rates testify, the Keynesian stimulus model is no longer viable. Economic research rejected Keynesian ideas in the 1970s. Still, it is an outmoded, pro-government theory that is still endorsed by government elites precisely because it empowers government to save the day. The government is the white knight.

At a recent G8 summit, leaders from Canada, Germany, and Sweden questioned the validity and/or sanity of continuing stimulus spending as a means to save the world-wide downturn. Irish Times (Jul. 9, 2009).

These foreign leaders are on the right track. What really needs to happen are huge tax rate cuts on both small businesses and all classes of individuals, rich and poor. Watch this speech of tax-cutter John F. Kennedy.

The Kennedy tax cuts were hugely successful. JFK was no failure. The Kennedy tax cuts yanked the United States from a severe economic downturn in the 1960s. America needs to repeat the Kennedy ideas and reject President Obama's attempt to return us to the failed policies of the past.

Representative Questions Bernanke/Fed Truthfullness

Blackrock Entity Emerging From Shadows

Representative Marcy Kapture (D-OH) grills Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, a South Carolina native.

She suggests that the Federal Reserve may be colluding with a corporation called Blackrock. I wrote about Blackrock and its connections to the NY Federal Reserve here.
While serving as the head of the New York Federal Reserve Bank, the Obama Administration's Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner approved a no-bid contract to BlackRock Financial Management.
Now, the Fed is giving Blackrock another huge contract. It is charged with the management of toxic mortgage backed security assets that the Federal Reserve aquired during the bailouts of wealthy Wall Street organizations. Ironically, it was the current Chief Executive Officer of Blackrock who created and sold the first of these poisonous derivatives to the Federal government agencies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Federal Reserve's contract with Blackrock places the fox at the door to guard the hen house. Bernanke's claims of firewalls in this video are bogus assertions aimed at the naive.

The Federal Reserve shield of secrecy is becoming more and more troubling to many in and out of Congress. It is refreshing to see a few courageous elected Representatives (whether Democrat or Republican) accuse it of collusion and fraud against American taxpayers. These charges are coming in open congressional hearings.

The audit is coming. When that creature (the Federal Reserve and its tangled nest favored entities) are finally dragged into the light of day in the audit, it will scream like the mythical mandrake root.

Must Read National Review Article

One of the emerging problem with the mostly unread House Cap and Tax Bill is it creates a cornucopia of possible government subsidies. This will empower lobbiests in Washington who will grovel before our elected leaders by giving away huge campaign contributions and other inducements in exchange for the bountiful subsidies this law would allow. In other words, the Bill will likely pass and be signed into law because it is a boon to politicians and Democrat politicians in particular.

Here are some excerpts from National Review Online, Stephen Spruiell & Kevin Williamson, Garden of Piggish Delights (July 2, 2009) outlining the biggest special interest give-aways:
1. The big doozy: Eighty-five percent of the carbon permits will not be sold at auction — they will be given away to utility companies, petroleum interests, refineries, and a coterie of politically connected businesses. If you’re wondering why Big Business supports cap-and-trade, that’s why. Free money for business, but higher energy prices for you.

2. The sale of carbon permits will enrich the Wall Street investment bankers whose money put Obama in the White House. Top of the list: Goldman Sachs, which is invested in carbon-offset development and carbon permissions. CNN reports:
Less than two weeks after the investment bank announced it would be laying off 10 percent of its staff, ***Goldman Sachs confirmed that it has taken a minority stake in Utah-based carbon offset project developer Blue Source LLC. . . . “Interest in the pre-compliance carbon market in the U.S. is growing rapidly,” said Leslie Biddle, Head of Commodity Sales at Goldman, “and we are excited to be able to offer our clients immediate access to a diverse selection of emission reductions to manage their carbon risk.”
3. With its rich menu of corporate subsidies and special set-asides for politically connected industries, Waxman-Markey has inspired a new corporate interest group, USCAP, the United States Climate Action Partnership — the group largely responsible for the fact that carbon permits are being given away like candy at Christmas rather than auctioned. And who is lined up to receive a piece of the massive wealth transfer that Waxman-Markey will mandate? Canada Free Press lists:
Alcoa, American International Group (AIG) which withdrew after accepting government bailout money, Boston Scientific Corporation, BP America Inc., Caterpillar Inc., Chrysler LLC (which continues to lobby with taxpayer dollars), ConocoPhillips, Deere & Company, The Dow Chemical Company, Duke Energy, DuPont, Environmental Defense, Exelon Corporation, Ford Motor Company, FPL Group, Inc., General Electric, General Motors Corp. (now owned by the Obama administration), Johnson & Johnson, Marsh, Inc., National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council, The Nature Conservancy, NRG Energy, Inc., Pepsico, Pew Center on Global Climate Change, PG&E Corporation, PNM Resources, Rio Tinto, Shell, Siemens Corporation, World Resources Institute, Xerox Corporation.
One major group of recipients of the free money being given to industry in the form of carbon permits are the electric utilities, represented in Washington by the Edison Electric Institute. Along with the coal and steel businesses, the utilities are positioned to receive a huge portion of the carbon permits — some of which will be disguised as measures for consumers — and have become one of the nation’s highest-spending lobbies, working to ensure that their interests are served by cap-and-trade.

Unemployment

The Obama Administration's January Predictions Versus Reality

The graphs above show projections the Obama Administration made in January. The projections took place when it was attempting to scare up votes for the $800 Billion, unfunded stimulus bill, legislation which was later passed by a Democrat Congress and signed into law by President Obama.

The graph, courtesy of The Heritage Foundation's Foundry Blog, Unemployment Spike Defies ‘Stimulus’ Claims (July 2, 2009) article compares the January, pie-in-the-sky predictions to stark reality . . . the actual unemployment rate since January.

Unemployment has risen not only above what the Obama Administration predicted, but surpassed even the estimated unemployment with no action whatsoever.

Still to come, the impact (i.e., huge interest payments) of borrowing $800 Billion from China.

EPA Suppresses Scientific Report Debunking Global Warming

So Much For Science Driving Policy

The e-mail proving the suppression are excerpted by writer Michelle Malkin, The climate change e-mails EPA doesn’t want you to see (June 24, 2009). Click on to see her piece.

Another day, another Obama cover-up.

The Competitive Enterprise Institute has obtained internal EPA e-mails that show the agency willfully and recklessly disregarded scientific data that undermined the bureaucracy’s global warming zealotry.
This information is especially relevant as Congress rushes to pass the cap-and-trade nightmare on Friday.

CEI general counsel Sam Kazman has notified the EPA and requested that the internal communications and suppressed study be released to the public and added to the public record. Will another whistleblower be disappeared? Note especially this warning to the dissenting scientist: “The time for such discussion of fundamental issues has passed for this round. The administrator and the administration has decided to move forward on endangerment, and your comments do not help the legal or policy case for this decision… I can only see one impact of your comments given where we are in the process, and that would be a very negative impact on our office.”

Read:

CEI is submitting a set of four EPA emails, dated March 12-17, 2009, which indicate that a significant internal critique of EPA’s position on Endangerment was essentially put under wraps and concealed. The study was barred from being circulated within EPA, it was never disclosed to the public, and it was not placed in the docket of this proceeding. The emails further show that the study was treated in this manner not because of any problem with its quality, but for political reasons.

CEI hereby requests that EPA make this study public, place it into the docket, and either extend or reopen the comment period to allow public response to this new study. We also request that EPA publicly declare that it will engage in no reprisals against the author of the study, who has worked at EPA for over 35 years.

The emails, attached hereto, consist of the following:

1) a March 12 email from Al McGartland, Office Director of EPA’s National Center for Environmental Economics (NCEE), to Alan Carlin, Senior Operations Research Analyst at NCEE, forbidding him from speaking to anyone outside NCEE on endangerment issues;

2) a March 16 email from Mr. Carlin to another NCEE economist, with a cc to Mr. McGartland and two other NCEE staffers, requesting that his study be forwarded to EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, which directs EPA’s climate change program. The email notes the quantity of peer-reviewed references in the study, and defends its inclusion of new research as well. It states Mr. Carlin’s view that “the critical attribute of good science is its correspondence to observable data rather than where it appears in
the technical literature.” It goes on to point out that the new studies “explain much of the observational data that have been collected which cannot be explained by the IPCC models.” (Emphases added);

3) a March 17 email from Mr. McGartland to Mr. Carlin, stating that he will not forward Mr. Carlin’s study. “The time for such discussion of fundamental issues has passed for this round. The administrator and the administration has decided to move forward on endangerment, and your comments do not help the legal or policy case for this decision… I can only see one impact of your comments given where we are in the process, and that would be a very negative impact on our office.” (Emphasis added);

4) a second March 17 email from Mr. McGartland to Mr. Carlin, dated eight minutes later, stating “ I don’t want you to spend any additional EPA time on climate change.”

Mr. McGartland’s emails demonstrate that he was rejecting Mr. Carlin’s study because its conclusions ran counter to EPA’s proposed position. This raises several major issues.

A. Incompleteness of the Rulemaking Record: The end result of withholding Mr. Carlin’s study was to taint the Endangerment Proceeding by denying the public access to important agency information. Court rulings have made it abundantly clear that a rulemaking record should include both “the evidence relied upon [by the agency] and the evidence discarded.” Ethyl Corp. v. EPA, 541 F.2d 1, 36 (D.C. Cir. 1976), cert. denied, 426 U.S. 941 (1976).

B. Prejudgment of the Outcome of the Endangerment Proceeding: The emails also suggest that EPA has prejudged the outcome of this proceeding, to the point where it arguably cannot be trusted to fairly evaluate the record before it. Courts have recognized “the danger that an agency, having reached a particular result, may become so committed to that result as to resist engaging in any genuine reconsideration of the issues.” Food Marketing Institute v. ICC, 587 F.2d 1285, 1290 (D.C. Cir. 1978).

C. Violations of EPA’s Commitment to Transparency and Scientific Honesty: Finally, the emails suggest that EPA’s extensive pronouncements about transparency and scientific honesty may just be rhetoric. Shortly before assuming office, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson declared: “As Administrator, I will ensure EPA’s efforts to address the environmental crises of today are rooted in three fundamental values: science-based policies and programs, adherence to the rule of law, and overwhelming transparency.” Jan. 23, 2009, link. See also Administrator Jackson’s April 23 Memo to EPA Employees, “Transparency in EPA’s Operations”. These follow the President’s own January 21 memo to agency heads on “Transparency and Open Government”. And in an April 27 speech to the National Academy of Sciences, the President declared that, “under my administration, the days of science taking a back seat to ideology are over.”

Because of ideology, however, it was this back seat to which Mr. Carlin’s study was relegated; more precisely, it was booted out of the car entirely.

For these reasons, we submit that EPA should immediately make Mr. Carlin’s study public by entering it into the Endangerment docket, and that it should either extend or reopen the comment period in this proceeding to allow public responses to that study. It should do so, moreover, while publicly pledging that Mr. Carlin will suffer no adverse repercussions from agency personnel. Mr. Carlin is guilty of no wrongdoing, but the tenor of the emails described above suggests he may well have reason to fear reprisals.
